A shelf is a run of its list
Put each shelf next to the list it comes from and the shelf is a contiguous slice: 9 apps, in list order, with no gaps. For the 3 shelves that don't start at #1, here is what sits above the slice:
- Productivity starts at #3. Above it: Google Drive (Popular #2) and Flaim Fantasy (Popular #3).
- Developer Tools starts at #4. Above it: Remote Desktop Commander (Popular #1), WPVibe (Popular #4) and GitHub (Popular #6).
- Healthcare starts at #2. Above it: Health (Popular #5).
Every app skipped is in Popular's top 6. The Popular shelf shows Popular's #1 to #9, and category shelves leave out the first 6 of those. Popular's #7, #8 and #9 (Outlook Email, Supabase and Firecrawl) do appear again on their category shelves. The data shows where the cut falls; it doesn't show why.
Two shelves that don't follow the store's order
New & Noteworthy (18 apps) and Small Business (16 apps) are editorial collections: short lists that mix categories. Their shelves still show the first 9 apps of the list, but the list itself isn't the store's order. Small Business holds 5 apps that are also in Popular, and lists them as HubSpot (#24), Canva (#17), Slack (#14), Shopify (#16) and ClickUp (#43). In Popular's order, Slack would come first.
These are the only shelves where a high category rank isn't the way in. We don't see how apps are chosen for them, and we won't guess. They are also small: 18 places on the home page between them.
What it takes: the top of your category
For the 13 category shelves the route is rank. To be on one you need to be inside the run the shelf shows: #1 to #9 in most categories, and as deep as #12 in Developer Tools on Oct 13, 2026, because 3 of the apps above are Popular's leaders. Popular's own shelf needs a top-9 place among all 6,611 ChatGPT apps.
How hard that is depends on the category list. Productivity has 1,400 apps and its shelf covers #3 to #11, the top 0.8% of the list. Security has 46, and its shelf shows 20% of the list. The same app can be a shelf candidate in one category and invisible in another.
Category leaders also fill Popular. Every app in Popular's top 9 is in the top 4 of its own category list, so the climb to a category shelf and the climb to Popular are the same climb. On Oct 13, 2026, Popular's shelf holds 4 from Developer Tools, 3 from Productivity, 1 from Healthcare and 1 from Communication.
How often shelves change
Slowly. In the 24 hours to October 13, 2026, one app entered a shelf: fal on Creativity. The other 15 shelves held the same apps as a day earlier. A shelf moves only when its list moves, and most list movement is other apps arriving, not one app climbing (see How to read rank changes).
The same apps show up more than once. 131 different apps fill the 144 places, and 10 are on more than one shelf. Shopify, Canva and Figma are on 3 each: both editorial collections plus their own category.
What you can influence, and what you can't
Start by measuring the distance. Take your rank in your category list and compare it with the shelf's last place: #9 in most categories, #11 in Productivity, #12 in Developer Tools and #10 in Healthcare. The gap is the number of apps you need to pass, or that need to leave the run above you. Check it often; it changes whenever apps are added above you.
You can influence:
- Your category. The shelf you can reach is your category's. A smaller list is a shorter climb, but only if the app belongs there; the wrong category puts your listing in front of the wrong readers.
- Where you're listed. Country lists keep the store's order with absent apps removed, so an app that isn't listed in a country can't be on a shelf there. Our shelf data is for the US; this follows from the country lists.
- Your listing. A shelf shows a name, an icon and one line. That line is the whole pitch.
- Whether people come back. We can't measure it. How ChatGPT orders its app directory covers what OpenAI has said about it.
You can't influence Popular's top 6, which push a category shelf down when they share your category; apps placed above you, each of which pushes the last app off a shelf; or the two editorial collections.
For 13 of the 16 shelves, the rule is visible in the data: be high in your category list. For Popular, be high in the whole store. Only the two editorial collections are chosen some other way.
Your category rank decides your shelf. Watch it on Top charts, count Popular's top 6 out of it, and treat #1 to #9 of what is left as the shelf.
