Who gets featured on ChatGPT's home page

On October 13, 2026, all 16 shelves on ChatGPT's app home page were unbroken 9-app runs of a list's order: 13 started at #1 and 3 started lower, skipping apps already in Popular's top 6. Only New & Noteworthy and Small Business follow no category list, so they are the two shelves that look hand-picked.

Sixteen shelves, nine slots each

ChatGPT's app directory opens with 16 shelves of 9 apps: Popular, New & Noteworthy, Small Business and one shelf per category. That is 144 slots, filled on October 13, 2026 by 131 different apps, because 10 apps appear on more than one shelf (Shopify, Canva and Figma on three each).

Every shelf is a window

For each shelf we compared its 9 apps with the full list the directory shows for the same category or collection. All 16 of 16 shelves are an unbroken run of that list: 9 consecutive positions, in the same order. 13 runs start at #1. The shelf adds no choice of its own; it shows the top of a list.

Why three shelves start lower

Productivity starts at #3, Developer Tools starts at #4 and Healthcare starts at #2. The positions they skip belong to apps already at the top of Popular. Popular's first 6 apps (Remote Desktop Commander, Google Drive, Flaim Fantasy, WPVibe, Health and GitHub) don't repeat on a category shelf, while #7 to #9 (Outlook Email, Supabase and Firecrawl) do. Outlook Email, for instance, is also #1 on the Communication shelf.

The two editorial collections

Two shelves don't come from a category. New & Noteworthy shows the first 9 of an 18-app list and Small Business the first 9 of a 16-app list. These lists don't follow any category's order, so they look chosen by hand. They are the only editorial placements on the page.

On the New & Noteworthy shelf, "new" is loose: the oldest dated app is Adobe, created December 4, 2025, and the newest is tldraw, created September 22, 2026. Small Business shows established names: Dropbox, Intuit QuickBooks, HubSpot, Stripe and Canva.

How often shelves change

Rarely, and only when ranks do. In the 24 hours to October 13, 2026, fal entered the Creativity shelf, and 15 of 16 shelves were unchanged. Popular's top 9 is the same in all 7 countries with Popular data, so the Popular shelf is too. Other shelves can differ where a country doesn't list an app: our Oct 13 analysis found the UK home page differing from the US on 5 of 16 shelves.

What it means for you

  • A category shelf is earned by rank. To appear, an app has to reach the top 9 of its category, or the top 9 after Popular's leaders are removed.
  • Category choice matters. Productivity has 1,400 apps competing for 9 slots; Scientific Research has 28.
  • A "featuring score" built on these shelves is a restatement of rank. Only New & Noteworthy and Small Business carry editorial information.
Method

Each shelf's 9 apps on the US home page are matched against the full list for the same slug. A shelf counts as a window when its apps occupy 9 consecutive positions of that list in order. Figures for October 13, 2026.
